Labour has suffered a sharp fall in membership over the past two months following controversies over its policy on gaza and its u-turn on green investment, according to figures released to its national executive committee (nec).
Afzal khan, yasmin qureshi, paula barker and naz shah are among the eight shadow junior ministers that quit in order to defy party orders to abstain from the vote. Rachel hopkins, sarah owen and andy slaughter have also left their frontbench roles after breaking the party whip to back the amendment.
However, notable exceptions to this are: the co-operative party which permits its members to also have membership of the labour party and the social democratic and labour party (sdlp); and the women's equality party which allows its members to also have membership of any other political party.
